چکیده
Purpose: To investigate the long-term functional and clinical outcomes of a tendon transfer to restore extension of the thumb using extensor carpi radialis brevis Methods and materials: From Jun 2005 to Sep 2012, 8 patients with rupture or division of extensor pollicis longus (6 males, 2 females; aged 16-52 years, mean age 30 years) underwent a tendon transfer using the extensor carpi radialis brevis to restore extension of the thumb. All patients were assessed by Geldmacher score system, mobility, pinch and grip strength of thumb comparing to the non-operated hand over an average of 36 months (range, 24–84 months) after the operation. Result: At an average follow-up of 36 months, all eight patients were able to extend their thumbs fully, and assessed as good or excellent by Geldmacher score system. Average grip strength of the operated hand was equal to that of the contra lateral hand, and tip pinch strengths were 92% of the contra lateral hand. There was no marked loss of extension motion and strength of wrist, and no other postoperative complications. Conclusions: The procedure of extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon transfer to extensor pollicis longus provides excellent long-term clinical results for restoring extension of the thumb. The procedure is safe, with few complications, which can be an alternate procedure of restoring extension of the thumb.

Moment arm and force-generating capacity of the extensor carpi ulnaris after transfer to the extensor carpi radialis brevis.
Tendon transfers to the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) are often performed to augment wrist extension. This study was conducted to analyze how transfer of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) to the ECRB affects the moment arms, force-generating capacity, and moment-generating capacity of the ECU over a range of wrist flexion-extension. A graphics-based computer model was developed from anat...
متن کاملThe influence of elbow position on the range of motion of the wrist following transfer of the brachioradialis to the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon.
BACKGROUND In patients who have an injury of the cervical spinal cord, the brachioradialis tendon may be transferred to the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon to restore voluntary wrist extension. We hypothesized that the active range of motion of the wrist depends on the position of the elbow after this transfer because the brachioradialis changes length substantially during elbow flexion, ...
متن کاملLate repair of combined extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis avulsion fractures.
Concomitant avulsion fractures of the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis tendons are relatively rare injuries. The usual injury mechanism is forced hyperflexion to an actively extended wrist. No consensus exists regarding the appropriate management of this injury, with some surgeons advocating closed treatment and others favoring operative fixation. The authors describe a novel surgical ...
متن کاملComparison of wrist and elbow stabilization following pinch reconstruction in tetraplegia.
PURPOSE Individuals with spinal cord injuries resulting in tetraplegia may receive tendon transfer surgery to restore grasp and pinch function. These procedures often involve rerouting the brachioradialis (Br) and the extensor carpi radialis longus tendons volar to the flexion-extension axis of the wrist, leaving the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle to provide wrist extension streng...
متن کاملFlexor carpi ulnaris transfer successfully used to gain strengthening of flexor digitorum superficialis tendons.
Transfer of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) to replace the power of the paralysed extensor digitorum communis and extensor pollicies longus has been described in the literature. However the use of FCU for strengthening flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) is relatively not widely known. In this report the use of the technique is dicussed to successfully restore the strength of the fingers of a l...
